Raw Cotton

Traditional supercalender roll cover material made from raw cotton fibres. Ideal for the production of art coated gloss papers.

Typical Uses

  • Art coated papers

Key Features

  • Wide nip - low specific nip pressure
  • Excellent marking resistance, due to fibre length
  • Excellent gloss production, due to high internal heat generation

Raw Cotton roll filling material is produced from raw cotton comber in loose fibre form, exactly as it was harvested from the cotton plant. Raw Cotton is one of the most traditional roll filling materials used in supercalendering.

After removal of seed debris the cotton is combed or 'carded' to achieve the desired fibre alignment. The cotton is then shaped, in a process unique to RHL, into a form in which it can be introduced to the roll shaft and compressed to a high density.

Raw Cotton rolls have a comparatively soft calendering surface, giving a wide nip load and therefore a low specific nip pressure. Deformation at this soft nip generates internal heat and provides the highest possible gloss production. Raw Cotton is used in the manufacture of the best art coated gloss papers. The material has excellent resistance to marking, due to the long, resilient, natural cotton fibres.
